End of Season?

Got to say that it isn’t looking too good for skiing again this year at the Park. Went for a walk Saturday morning to see what conditions were like and we have approximately 50% coverage (at best) of boiler plate ice. With highs above 50 degrees predicted every day for the next week I am guessing the end has come.  We will be putting in singletrack and working on the skills park this spring/summer/fall for MTBing so keep tabs with our progress at our sister site www.manisteemtb.org.

3/4/2012 Grooming Update

Sorry for the late update. All trails were groomed this morning with track set on all. I remembered the loppers and also cut back many of the trees that were hanging over the trails. Tried to take out many of the ruts that were made by the skis on the snowmobile so I think the surface should be a lot flatter. Enjoy!

Grooming? What Grooming?

I headed out to ski about an hour after I had gotten done grooming and about 2″ of snow had already fallen on the trail. There were a lot of people out there skiing so the trail is getting skied in well but don’t expect fresh corduroy. Lets hope all of this snow allows us to build up enough base to have some good skiing even after it warms up!

3/3/2012 Grooming Update

Groomed all of the trails this morning and set track. The snow fal varied from 6-10″ out there and was super wet and sticky. When I rolled it, it got kind of chunky and uneven but  was firm enough for me to then go out again with the ginzu. The resulting corduroy is a little wavy, there are some rut from the snowmobile skis and there are still some chunks but all in all it should be good skiing.

I am hoping to hit the trail with the knives tomorrow morning once things have set up to smooth out the imperfections. It was way too wet today to use the knives to smooth things out.

Base is holding up and snow is on the way!

There are definitely a few thin spots that you need to dodge but overall the trail is in good shape for how little snow there is. Things were still very firm this afternoon even though it was 36 degrees and sunny so it is staying smooth with no ruts. Hopefully we get the 1-3″ that are predicted for Tuesday night!

2/25/2012 Grooming Update

Did a single pass on all of the trails this morning with no classic track set. About 1-2″ more snow had fallen overnight for about 3″ total of new snowfall since Thursday night. There are some thin patches out there but the groomer filled them in as well as can be expected for only getting 3″ of fresh. It was snowing hard while grooming and for a while after so I am hoping that provides that little bit extra in the thin spots. Should be decent skiing. Enjoy!!

It’s Alive!!!

I headed out to the park tonight fully expecting major chunks of the trail to be down to dirt. Instead I found almost the entire trail still had a inch or more of base and the bare spots were no worse then two weeks ago when 3″ of snow put us back to excellent trail conditions! The pulse is weak but the ski trail is still alive and kicking!

So far we have gotten about an inch of snow and the trail is skiable with most of it being very good with a few really thin spots mixed in. Grooming right now would do more damage than good. If we get a couple more inches of snow tonight we will groom in the morning and we should be good to go for a weekend of great skiing.

At the time of writing this, ski with caution. There are some thin spots but also areas where there is ice under the new snow.
